UCLA PEERS® Socialization Groups


For Adolescents

 A 16-week evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated teens in Middle and High School who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends. Teens will be grouped by age, and groups will meet weekly for 1 1/2 hours, in Buckhead.  During each group session they are taught important social sills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in session during socialization activities.  Parents attend a separate group at the same time, and are taught how to assist their teens in making and keeping friends by helping to expand their teen's social network and providing feedback through coaching during weekly socialization homework assignments. Enrollment is limited. Parent participation is required.

Your teen will learn:

  • How to use appropriate conversational skills
  • How to find common interests by trading information
  • How to appropriately use humor
  • How to enter and exit conversations with peers
  • How to handle rejection, teasing and bullying
  • How to handle rumors and gossip
  • How to be a good sport
  • How to choose appropriate friends
  • How to be a good host
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements
  • How to change a bad reputation

For Young Adults (18 to 30 years old)
A 16-week evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated young adults, who are interested in learning skills to make and keep friends, and develop romantic relationships. During each group session, young adults are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills. Enrollment is limited.

Topics of Instruction Include:
  • How to be a good sport
  • How to use appropriate conversational skills
  • How to find common interests by trading information
  • How to appropriately use humor
  • How to enter and exit conversations between peers
  • How to be a good host during get-togethers
  • How to choose appropriate friends
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements
  • Dating/etiquette skills
  • How to handle rejection, teasing, bullying
  • How to have appropriate boundaries
